Description/achievement of initiative
Build and strengthen capacity of the community in understanding
A) How does the water system within their buildings and their neighbourhood work
B) What is the quality of water from the unsustainable and unreliable sources & resources they are currently relying on
C) How to develop an evidence and science based long-term and sustainable building-specific and neighbourhood-scale strategies to have access to secure and sustainable supply for clean water which they can implement
Implementation methodologies
Below is description of the Action Plan & Methodology
1) Data Collection of Water demand & infrastructure on existing building sites - water use behaviour, water consumption, borewells, dug wells , rainwater harvesting structure, water storage tanks and other infrastructure within the buildings & neighbourhood scale information on topography, drainage, hydrogeology within the layout
2) Assessment of Water Quality of Various Water Sources & Resources - undertake water quality tests followed by presentations on the implications of water quality on health for design and cost of treatment, quality requirements for drinking and non drinking needs
3) Sensitisation and Trainings for capacity building of the residents to take part in developing a plan for access to secure & sustainable water supply for their own buildings
4) Data analysis to develop sustainable and decentralised water security plan delineating individual actions and solutions for retrofitting individual buildings within the neighbourhood such as - water efficiency measures, rainwater harvesting, greywater recycling
5) Shared actions and solutions sited within the layout such as - community scale stormwater harvesting & treatment for common use, groundwater recharge, rain gardens & swales to improve the stormwater quality entering the lake
6) Documentation of the process, learnings and outcomes to inform the scaling and diffusion process.
Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer
Coordination mechanisms/governance structure
The initiative is led by Urban Water Doctor (UWD) based in Bangalore. The program is governed by a stakeholder reference group which is made of the representatives from partner organisations.
During the current pilot stage - UWD engages with the community of residents of 2 selected neighbourhoods via vSave - a local active environment group that works to protect the Gottigere Lake and the local residents are its members.
UWD then reports on the progress and milestones to the stakeholder reference group of which vSave is also a member.
