Description/achievement of initiative

NGO Federation of Nepal (NFN) an umbrella organization of 6,247 NGOs in the aftermath of democratic political change and establish of multiparty parliamentary system in Nepal, NFN established a forum to discuss and accelerate all 17 SDG goal in Nepal. To Increase meaningful participation of citizens for each SDG foal in sustainable manner, establish peace, human rights, democracy to increase meaningful participation of citizens, expand roles of NGOs for Socio-Economic transformation, advocate for public policy reform and effective service delivery and play effectual roles in national and international common humanitarian issues including clean drinking water and sanitation.us

Implementation methodologies

NFN as network organization, coordinate and ensure government to prepare effective plan consultation with line ministries, other government agencies, civil society organizations, the private sector and development partners. NFN take initiation to collect progress and achievements data to be made available to the government in preparing National report on the progress and achievements made in each SDG goal. Support government and other partners to prepare status and road map for acceleration of SDG goal 2016-2030 that identified national indicators as well as localize its sub indicators at province and community level. NFN also organize national campaign and aware community on the rights and peace building process. NFN formed SDG Forum of which identified target groups for the program planning and implementation by forming thematic groups in each of the province to address SDG in their target areas. Major groups including women and girls, persons with disability, Indigenous People, Youth and CSOs have been working on SDGs through their own initiatives. They are mainly involved in creating awareness and publicity of SDGs at province and local level. CSOs have organized reviews of SDGs in partnership with National Planning Commission of Government and UNDP.NGO Federation of Nepal published Handbook on SDGs in Nepali language. Moreover, different CSOs and their networks are publishing their reports, books and IEC materials as per their working thematic areas.On behalf of CSOs, NFN published a Civil Society Report on Implementation of SDGs in Nepal. The development partners have shown interest in supporting government's efforts. Most programmes and projects supported by Nepal’s development partners are implemented through government systems and support is mostly aligned with national programmes and priorities. These partners have taken initiatives to align their ODA with the intervention in infrastructure development, hydropower generation, enhancing agricultural production, mitigating climate change impacts and conservation, social sector development (especially improving quality of education and healthcare) and inclusive development and governance. NFN implemented SDG 6 and 16 together with donors mainly in province 3 and 6 with institutional mechanism and started incorporating budget and plan in municipalities through provincial government structure.

Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer

Strategically, NFN organized campaigns, awareness raising sessions, and review meetings to the respective CSOs and its networks and government at the central, provincial and district level.

Coordination mechanisms/governance structure

NFN played a crucial and leadership role to mainstream government, UN agencies, NGOs and INGOs in single chain to address and overcome challenges, for effective planning, monitoring and implementation of SDG in the country. For this initiation, NFN established high level institutional mechanisms for strategic guidance, coordination and monitoring, and integration of SDGs into national level plans, policies and budgets.The initiatives has led by the National Planning Commission (NPC) which is the apex body of the governance in formulating plans, policies and programmes in the country. NFN in Nepal is the leader and secretariat of MDG for plan, implement and monitor country’s program and taking similar roles and responsibilities in SDG as well. Coordinate with National Planning Commission to incorporate SDG indicators, take leadership and coordinated action with other thematic federations so that we will linkage all SDG goals with SDG 6 and 16 and organized high level, parliamentarian and ministries level meetings to discuss the detail on CSO friendly environment in the central. Similarly, NFN coordinate with UN Agencies to access funding to CSOs and formed the Nepal SDG Forum, which has identified target groups and formed thematic groups. Major groups including women and girls, persons with disability, Indigenous People, Youth and CSOs have been working on SDGs through their own initiatives as well as getting financial and technical support from the donors.. They are mainly involved in creating awareness and publicity of SDGs at province and local level. The NFN is initiating SDG agendas as joint partnership and collaboration with different partners and contractors, government agencies, local bodies, community based organizations, organizations of marginalized groups and women and private sector entities to harmonize and accelerate SDG in sustainable manner. For the effective SDG intervention, NFN is being coordinating, communicating and collaborating with GoN organizations at all levels from central level to the VDC level government structure. NFN also advocate SDG issues in all 7 provincial government with its networks mainly for inclusive planning of their own budget mainly focusing to prioritize budget in line with SDG targets.
