MEETING SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS THROUGH DHARMIC APPROACH
Description/achievement of initiative

The Sikh Dharam and other Indian Dharmas have well developed concepts of human relationship to all life, environment and inanimate objects too. They have served well for thousands of years in supporting and promoting intricate ecosystems but broke down in the twentieth century. Nishan-e-Sikhi is an affiliate institution of Sikh Human Rights Group and runs several projects based on Dharmic concepts of Sikhi. The projects range from tree planting, environmental protection, education to career development and training people for vocations. The initiative meets several UN SDGs through a dharmic route and encourages others to do so.

Implementation methodologies

The organisation holds seminars, workshops, runs education schools with scholarships for children from poor backgrounds, runs a nursery to promote biodiversity with wide ranging of plants and nursery. The organisation engages villages to plant saplings in strategic places, nurture them and maintain them. Over 300000 trees have been planted. The organisation has experts who go to villages to bring greater awareness of climate issues, clean water, wastage and adopting agriculture methods to improve sustainable environment. The organisation runs 11 education establishments from nursery schools to colleges with the most modern technology available in the region. The organisation runs free schooling for many children from villages around to enable them to take opportunities in further education and careers. The organisation also runs career development projects for children form poor backgrounds. The organisation ensures that girls and women have equal opportunities to education, further education and technology.

Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer

The organisation encourages experts, academics and practitioners to run courses and seminars. It teaches villagers about climate change, sustainable farming and benefits of planting trees. It teaches sustainable development courses in its education institutions. It helps children from poor backgrounds to reach their potential and compete for high level careers in Government and private sector. The organisation works in partnership with Sikh Human Rights Group to gain access to international institutions and link with similar projects around the world. The organisation brings in experts from academic institutions to strengthen the stakeholders engaged with it. It encourages training in technology and technology transfer through classes in its education establishments and field work by taking experts to the villages.

Coordination mechanisms/governance structure

The organisation in Khadur Sahib is run by Baba Sewa Singh with a management team that coordinates tree planting, environmental projects, awareness about climate change, water preservation, poverty reduction, schools, career development institutions and community voluntary work. Each of the projects are managed by individuals either on a voluntary basis or in sectors such as education institutions, by professional staff. They are represented on a coordination committee. The Sikh Human Rights Group has a partnership with Nishan-e Sikhi and integrates its work with UN SDGs. New civil society projects run by other NGOs will be encouraged to integrate their work with UN SDGs and in partnership with Khadur Sahib and SHRG have access to UN platforms. Their project managers will be part of a coordination committee run from Nishan-e-Sikhi, Khadur Sahib.
