Description/achievement of initiative
At the University at Albany, sustainability is all about community. We strive to impart the knowledge that individual actions add up to a larger whole and that we are all accountable and responsible for the well-being of our society and our planet. Most recently, we have focused on greening our operations and reducing our carbon footprint. Currently we have achieved a 14% reduction in our emissions over the last five years and will open two LEED Gold certified buildings in the next two years.
Implementation methodologies
In the coming years, we will expand our commitment to sustainability beyond operations and into the classroom. We will be developing a coordinated and strategic vision with regards to sustainability for our curriculum offerings and research activities. We are about to complete our first AASHE STARS report which will help us to identify our strengths and weaknesses with an eye towards identifying metrics and goals for measuring sustainability progress. As we continue to evolve our sustainability community, we look forward to working with our colleagues within SUNY to embody our common vision ""to learn, to search, to serve"" and bring sustainability to life for our campuses and surrounding communities. We also are anticipating forming new bonds across the state through our affiliation with the New York Coalition for Sustainability in Higher Education (NYCSHE); the nation through our membership in the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE); and the world with this association with the UNSD.
