UNTGG China Gender Facility administered by UN Women China: Advocacy for Gender Awareness in Disaster Management in Zhejiang, Hubei and Gansu Province, China
Description/achievement of initiative

UN Women will, through the project, support provincial governments to take measures to promote gender equality in disaster risk reduction work in the three targeted provinces, so that women's rights and attention to their special needs in disaster risk reduction in the three targeted provinces are ensured.

Implementation methodologies

A comprehensive assessment will be conducted to determine gender gaps in disaster risk reduction policies, plans, projects, and activities and ascertain the nature of, and factors preventing, women's participation and leadership in local disaster risk reduction efforts. The findings will be shared with national and provincial-level officials and policy makers through training sessions and advocacy. Seminars will share the results of research to enhance officials' support for gender equality in disaster risk reduction plans and activities. Training workshops on gender equality and disaster management will be provided for the Ministry of Civil Affairs officials at the provincial level, so that their capability to incorporate gender perspectives into their daily disaster relief and reconstruction work will be enhanced. An advocacy conference on gender equality and disaster risk reduction will be held, including gender experts, government officials at national and provincial level and the national media, and a seminar will be held to share the research results with government officials who are responsible for the formulation of the Guidance on Disaster Risk Reduction in the Urban and Rural Communities.
