Description/achievement of initiative

PPP to develop reliable tools and build capacity to manage forests in the Congo Basin, a critical region for biodiversity conservation.

Implementation methodologies

Commitment developed to serve African REDD Focal Points in each of the 6 countries – certain ministers have signed the specific REDD data licence: François NAOUYEMA, Minister of the Environment of the Central African Republic, José ENDUNDO BONONGE, Minister of the Environment, of Nature Conservation and Tourism of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Henri DJOMBO, Minister of Sustainable Development, Forest Economics and Environment, Republic of the Congo.

Supportive resources will be funded by an AFD grant and in kind contribution from EADS Astrium.

Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer

Coordination mechanisms/governance structure


Transfer capacity and know how to national authorities in charge of REDD+ national strategies.
Produce forest maps from archive and recent imagery to baseline deforestation trends.
Make satellite data available at no cost to relevant institutions and registered users developing REDD programmes.
Collect high resolution satellite imagery over the Congo Basin countries.
