Ocean Technology Incubator
Description/achievement of initiative

The Mauritius OTI would serve as a platform to attract scientists and entrepreneurs to use the waters of Mauritius as a test bed for the development of marine technologies. Three programmes have been identified, namely for 18-month, 24-month and three-year projects which would address the challenges of water resources through research and innovation on technologies for ocean wave energy, desalination as well as instruments in seaport-related activities such as systems to track assets at sea, fleet management, ship control systems and data management. Applied research to develop and adapt technologies to SIDS and regional needs would be favoured.

Implementation methodologies

- Coordination meetings through the advisory council on marine renewable energy - Selection of projects to be financed by a Research and Innovation Advisory Board (under the Centre for Research and Innovation Grant scheme at the MRC)- Establishment of reporting and verification mechanisms to monitor projects selected

Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer

- Collaboration with the Faculty of Ocean Sciences, University of Mauritius, to establish programmes that will support the development of the ocean economy

Coordination mechanisms/governance structure

- Partnership will be driven by the National Taskforce on Ocean Economy with the support of BOI and MRC
