Local, Year-round Sustainable Agriculture
Description/achievement of initiative

This is a startup initiative dealing with proven technological advancements in sustainable agriculture, for adoption into local communities worldwide. It focuses on renewable, low energy input / high output systems, resilient to the effects of severe weather, pests, grid failure and nuclear fallout. It will result in local food safety and security, water quality improvement and conservation, zero toxic waste output, and high quality, nutrient dense fresh fruits and vegetables. This initiative also proposes to provide, education on symbiotic relationships, research opportunities, employment, and education on the importance of biodiversity, ecology, sustainability, and connection to the earth.

Implementation methodologies

The intention is to provide a seasonal permaculture research garden and an earth-sheltered (earth heated and cooled) greenhouse, where food would primarily be grown in an aquaponic setup, year-round. The latest monitoring and control technologies would primarily be driven by renewable solar and wind turbine energy inputs. The intended location would be in the Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre in Midland, Ontario, Canada, a protected wildlife preserve encompassing 3000 acres of wetlands and forest that is currently run by Environment Canada and Canadian Wildlife Services. The Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre currently provides research and educational services, kids summer camps, low impact recreational opportunities, events, and eco-tourism. Implementation will be carried out in pre-planned phases as funding becomes available.

Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer

As each phase is completed, assessed, and proven, duplication in other communities will take place for further scrutiny, testing, research, knowledge sharing, and assessment with the goal to proliferate in perpetuity.
