Description/achievement of initiative
Today, natural and manmade disasters threaten lives and livelihoods, and hamper the resilience of communities. Urbanisation, population growth, food insecurity and climate change are creating new types of risks which require building resilience and emergency preparedness. We are committed to contributing to better manage these risks.
Specifically, we commit collectively to:
1.Prioritize system-wide early action when there is evidence that a major crisis is emerging,
2.Contribute to strengthening local resilience by supporting strategic and coordinated local capacity building programmes on emergency preparedness in all countries with Humanitarian Coordinators and other high risk countries
Implementation methodologies
We pledge to achieve these commitments in support of governments, local authorities, communities and first-responders who provide relief to people affected by crisis.
Collectively, we will pursue the above commitments through the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC), the primary mechanism for inter-agency coordination of humanitarian assistance. It is a unique forum involving United Nations agencies, funds and programmes, IOM, civil society NGOs and the International Committee of the Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. Specifically, we will strengthen system-wide early warning and early action towards mapping, collecting and integrating information from across the international system. In addition, we will work with development partners to ensure that humanitarian action planning and delivery is well integrated into longer-term sustainability goals to build stronger local and national resilience.
