This session of the program focuses on partnerships that have committed to advance this objective.

A new collaborative partnership between UN-DESA, UN Global Compact with support from the UN Office for Partnerships, developed in response to United Nations Member States stressing the need to develop ways to improve transparency, accountability and the sharing of experiences of multi-stakeholder partnerships and on the review and monitoring of these partnerships.

The 2030 Agenda highlights the determination to ensure that everyone can enjoy prosperous and fulfilling lives and that economic, social and technological progress occurs in harmony with nature. The Agenda also highlights the determination to protect the planet from degradation, including through sustainable consumption and production, sustainably managing its natural resources and taking urgent action on climate change, so that it can support the needs of the present and future generations. This session of the program focuses on partnerships that have committed to advance these two objectives.

The 2030 Agenda stresses that governments, international organizations, the business sector and other non-State actors and individuals must contribute to changing unsustainable consumption and production patterns, including through the mobilization, from all sources, of financial and technical assistance to strengthen developing countries’ scientific, technological and innovative capacities to move towards more sustainable patterns of consumption and production. In addition, the Agenda acknowledges that quality, accessible, timely and reliable disaggregated data will be needed to help with the measurement of progress and to ensure that no one is left behind. Such data is key to decision making. This session of the program focuses on partnerships that have committed to advance this objective.

The Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS Conference) was held from 1 to 4 September 2014 in Apia, Samoa. Close to 300 partnerships were registered towards the Conference, addressing a range of priority areas, including Sustainable Economic Development, Climate Change & Disaster Risk management, Social Development in SIDS, Health and NCDs, Youth and Women, Sustainable Energy, Oceans, Seas and Biodiversity, Water and Sanitation, and Food Security and Waste Management.

In December 2015, as a direct follow up to the SIDS Conference, the General Assembly established, through resolution A/RES/70/202, the SIDS Partnership Framework for the purpose of monitoring and ensuring the full implementation of pledges and commitments through partnerships for Small Island developing States.

It’s now been almost two years since the international community came together at the SIDS Conference, pledging its support to the sustainable development of SIDS, and the announcement of a range of partnerships devoted to SIDS. What has been the progress of these partnerships since 2014?

On the occasion of the 2016 High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, Maldives and Italy, in their capacity as co-chairs of the Steering Committee on Partnerships for SIDS – a crucial element of the SIDS Partnerships Framework - are organizing a stock taking event on SIDS Partnerships, in collaboration with the UN Secretariat. The event will provide an opportunity for reviewing progress made by existing partnerships, sharing of good practices, lessons learned and challenges and challenges faced in implementation.
