SIDSnet

Mission

SIDSnet logoThe Small Islands Developing States Network (SIDSnet) was first established in 1997 as a direct follow-up to the Barbados Programme of Action. The mission of SIDSnet was to support the sustainable development of SIDS through enhanced information and communication technology.

Today, in pursuit of its mission, SIDSnet focuses on strengthening Research and Data Management by serving as a database for

  • island publications,
  • UN resolutions and decisions,
  • development indicators,
  • national and regional statistics,
  • and external resources.

Through SIDSnet, this wealth of information is easily accessible by all stakeholders. Furthermore, SIDSnet improves the visibility and awareness of the central challenges encumbering island development, thereby raising the profile of SIDS in the international policy circles that influence the flow of financial resources and technical assistance.

Future Outlook

In the near future, additional developments of SIDSnet will include

  • the establishment of stakeholder networks,
  • interactive services (such as e-forums),
  • technical cooperation gateways,
  • and stronger ties with academia.

Moreover, SIDSnet has been proposed for use as the portal to and home for the University Consortium of Small Island States (UCSIS), which was endorsed at the 2005 Mauritius International Meeting to Review the Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of SIDS.
