"Implementation is imperative if we are to attain the future we want"

- Ban Ki-moon, United Nations Secretary General
As part of the Partnerships Drivers series, we interviewed Foreign Minister of the Republic of Seychelles, Mr. Jean-Paul Adam.

Small Island Developing States (SIDS) around the world face unique challenges in the context of sustainable development, including vulnerabilities to climate change such as a rise in sea-levels. "If we don't address climate change, islands may not exist".

Partnerships for Sustainable Development
Partnerships are considered one of the most participatory and effective mechanisms to implement sustainable development and enhance international cooperation.

Partnerships for sustainable development have a special character; they are voluntary, multi-stakeholder initiatives specifically linked to the implementation of globally agreed commitments, in particular in the Plan of Implementation of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) (Johannesburg Plan of Implementation), Agenda 21, the Programme for the Further Implementation of Agenda 21 and the Rio+20 outcome. However, these partnerships are not a substitute for government responsibilities and commitments; they are intended to facilitate, strengthen and expedite implementation by involving those relevant stakeholders that can make a contribution to sustainable development.

A Partnerships Forum was organized at Rio+20. The Forum consisted of five highly dynamic and interactive sessions to highlight the significant contributions of partnerships to the implementation of sustainable development. The Forum aimed to identify and showcase dedicated partnerships to facilitate the implementation of priority actions agreed at the Rio+20 Conference as well as strengthen this collaborative mechanism to make it an even more accountable vehicle for implementation. The Partnerships Forum ignited the enthusiasm, commitment and leadership of different stakeholders to continue strengthening partnerships in the follow up of the Conference. Please click here for a summary of the Forum.

The Rio+20 outcome document also offers valuable references and mandates on concrete areas to advance further work on the use of partnerships. Please click here for partnerships references and related issues in the Rio+20 outcome document.
