Energy Workshop for African Energy Experts: Operationalising the NEPAD Energy Initiative

02-04 June 2003
Dakar, Senegal

In partnership with the Government of Senegal, the United Nations convened a workshop of African energy experts on the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) energy initiative. The overall objective of the workshop, which took place from 2-4 June 2003 in Dakar, Senegal, was to provide a forum for inputs by African energy experts into the operationalisation of the NEPAD energy initiative. Some 30 African energy experts participated in the workshop, drawn from the ranks of universities and research institutions, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), government agencies and the private sector. The Energy and Transport Branch joined forces with the Office of the Special Adviser on Africa and the United Nations Environment Programme–Collaborating Centre on Energy and Environment to fund and organise the workshop.

The workshop aimed to identify gaps in the understanding of the linkages between climate change and sustainable development, examine and discuss analytical tools to improve the understanding of the link between climate change and sustainable development, and assist countries to integrate adaptation and mitigation strategies and policies into national sustainable development plans and strategies.
