The Day of Local Authorities was organized on the 18th of April 1995, as part of the third session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (11-28 April 1995), in New York. The Day was a joint project of ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability, the Secretariat of the Commission on Sustainable Development and the United Nations Centre on Human Settlements.
The basis of the events under the umbrella of this Day was decision E/CN./17/1994/20, paragraph 132(k), of the CSD, taken at its second session, requesting further work to highlight the role of local authorities in achieving sustainable development.
Among the Day's events were a panel discussion involving Mayors from 5 cities around the world and launching of 14 case studies on the role of local authorities in the Agenda 21. An exhibition titled From Rio to Istanbul: Local Agenda 21, was available for viewing for the duration of the third session of the CSD.
