Following the UNFCCC COP13 in Bali, the UN Chief Executives Board (CEB) declared technology transfer as one of the focus areas of the UN system’s work on climate change. The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN-DESA) have been assigned the task of co-convening a process to support UN system-wide coherence and international cooperation on climate change-related technology development and transfer.
In this capacity, these agencies have supported the CEB in organizing a COP15 side event focusing on actions and strategies for the transfer and deployment of clean technologies and the promotion of energy for sustainable development.
While the UNFCCC’s Parties combine their efforts to ensure economic growth along low carbon emission paths, the UN system has a major catalytic role to play in supporting and actively fostering their efforts. With its wealth of programmes, tools and instruments for delivery, the UN system provides a broad foundation for facilitating a global transition to a low-carbon economy.
Low-carbon technologies are central to meeting the challenges, and taking advantage of the opportunities, posed by climate change. This UN-coordinated side event will focus on actions and programmes related to clean energy technologies, with a specific emphasis on international cooperation.
This event will bring heads of major UN organizations and other agencies together to discuss the role of international cooperation in accelerating the global development and deployment of climate friendly technologies, particularly in developing countries.
It will feature statements and input from the heads of UNDESA, UNDP, GEF, WIPO, UNIDO, UNEP, IRENA as well as the UN Foundation. H.E. Mr. Jairam Ramesh, Minister, Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India will participate as a special guest.
The session will focus on how technology can be used to address the climate change, energy and development priorities of all countries.
Relevant topics such as the following will be among the many issues discussed:
