Technology

Environmentally Sound Technologies (ESTs) are not just individual technologies, but total systems which include know-how, procedures, goods and services, and equipment as well as organizational and managerial procedures.

Technology cooperation involves joint efforts by enterprises and Governments, both suppliers of technologies and its recipients. Therefore, such cooperation entails an iterative process involving government, the private sector, and research and development facilities to ensure the best possible results from the transfer of technology.

The IPCC defines technology transfer as a broad set of processes covering the flows of know-how, experience and equipment for mitigating and adapting to climate change among different stakeholders such as Governments, private sector entities, financial institutions, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and research/educational institutions (IPCC 2000b).

Technology CSD Work Programme / Areas of Work

The information here is structured according to the main subject areas in the CSD Work Programme on Technology Transfer and the subsequent CSD 7 decision on Technology.

The selected subject areas have been arranged alphabetically. The information contained shows the evolution of the work by, or with the strong involvement of, the Division for Sustainable Development in each of the selected areas. Consequently, the information reflects both work already performed and work in progress.

In both cases, links are made to activities of other agencies and organizations, within and outside the U.N. system.
