Electricity trade among countries is growing, enhancing security of supply and contributing to the achievement of sustainable development goals. The Johannesburg Plan of Implementation (JPOI) adopted at the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in 2002, calls for action to "[s]trengthen and facilitate, as appropriate, regional cooperation arrangements for promoting cross-border energy trade, including the interconnection of electricity grids" Especially in regions where energy resources are unevenly distributed, such as Africa, international power grid interconnection is a topic of particular relevance.
This publication addresses the multiple benefits to be gained from international electric power grid interconnections. It examines the technical, economic, legal, political, social and environmental issues associated with electricity interconnections.
