The UN PIATF coordinates the activities of the relevant United Nations funds, programmes and specialized agencies in the Pacific to support the realization of the commitments made by Heads of State and Government in the UN Political Declaration on NCDs, the commitments made by Pacific Ministers of Health in the Honiara and Apia Communiqus and the declaration of a NCD crisis in the Pacific issued by Pacific island Forum Leaders at their 42nd meeting in Auckland, New Zealand in 2011. The partnership works toward supporting Pacific island countries and areas in achieving the global and Pacific specific voluntary targets for NCD prevention and control by 2025.

Within their respective mandates, the responsibilities of the PIATF members are to support the implementation and monitoring of relevant policy options and proposed actions in line with the objectives of the task force. The task force may undertake resource mobilization and plan and implement joint work on NCD prevention and control in line with agencies mandates and areas of work. The partnership supports coordinated systematic support to Member States at national level in efforts to support responses to prevent and control NCDs and mitigate their impact as well as to support processes and institutional mechanisms for whole of government and whole of society approaches for health and well-being to address social determinants of health.

The partnership facilitates multisectoral in-country support to Member States in the Pacific in the area of NCD prevention and control. The partnership also facilitates systematic and timely information exchange amongst members about existing and planned programmes and activities in relation to NCDs, governance of health and social determinants of health.

The PIATF is convened and led by WHO Division of Pacific Technical Support (DPS), which also provides the secretariat for the task force. Its responsibilities are to:- Convene and lead meetings of the task force- Facilitate communication, coordination and exchange of information between members of the task force- Act as point of entry for enquiries and information regarding activities of the task force

Membership of the task force is open to UN system agencies, funds and programmes in the Pacific region. This includes: - World Health Organization (WHO) - United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) - United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) - United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) - International Labour Organization (ILO) - United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) - Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) - United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia-Pacific (UNESCAP) - United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) - Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)
