This issue of Natural Resources Forum is devoted to transport, one of the themes of the discussions at the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development in 2010 and 2011. The relationship between transport systems and human societies is multi-faceted, and interfaces occur at various geographical, institutional, and socio-economic levels. Defining a sustainability perspective on transport is therefore quite challenging, so numerous are the angles from which it can be approached. The articles included in this special issue reflect some of these different perspectives.
