Reporting year: 2021
Achievement at a glance
Positive Impact have continued to engage with the global event sector on the SDGs. There is a focus on SDG13, Climate Action with COP26 in November 2021. In July 2021, the ‘Road to COP26: Event Sector Transformation' was launched; the initiative is supported by SME Climate Hub and aims to support events SMEs to join the race to zero campaign and UNFCCC Climate Action Framework for Events. As of September 2021, Positive Impact have gathered over 50 founding members for the framework and 50 SMEs have made a net zero commitment as part of the race to zero campaign.
Challenges faced in implementation
COVID19 was a challenge this year with the event sector devastated as a result of the pandemic. This could have led to a lack of concern for the sustainable development goals because the sector was only focused on the successful return to face-to-face. At the beginning of the year, the event sector was difficult to engage due to this. However, as the year went on, Positive Impact were able to change the narrative to the event sector building back better post COVID19.
Next steps
Positive Impact’s next steps and deliverables for 2021-2022 haven't changed, our themes are: a new narrative for events; capacity building; innovation; and leadership. In 2021-2022, this could lead mean at least 1000 small to medium size businesses (SMEs) making net zero commitment and being educated on how to act on those commitments. It also could lead to at least 1000 SMEs being supported on the consideration of human and child rights when planning an event. Positive Impact could be engaging with other government bodies on the event sustainability government strategies such as the strategy provided to the UK department of culture, media, and sport in 2020-2021. There also could be 2000-5000 ambassadors being supported to advance the narrative of the event sector and human connection in the decade of accountability. Positive Impact and partners will support the review of ISO 20121.
