SDG Philanthropy Platform
Description/achievement of initiative

SDG Philanthropy Platform is a vehicle for catalyzing multi-stakeholder partnerships to advance the SDGs - a project implemented by UNDP, Foundation Center and Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors. The Platform is fostering a multi-stakeholder approach at country and global levels, as well as creating an interactive website www.SDGfunders.org, which captures philanthropic data and guides multiple stakeholders through national development priorities and planning. In Kenya, Colombia, Indonesia, Ghana and Zambia, the Platform has been piloting the processes needed to create a systematic track towards the engagement of foundations in SDGs as well incubating and deepening collective, innovative and transformative solutions to achieving the SDGs.

Implementation methodologies

The objectives and deliverables of the Platform will be met by the three implementing partners - UNDP, Foundation Center, and RPA through its guidance of a multi-stakeholder Collaboration Committee, with each organization having fiduciary and management responsibilities for the activities within its respective component. In pilot countries, the Platform is represented by UNDP country office, which is collaborating with local partners, philanthropic networks. The pilot work will result in development of models of collaboration for replication, set of diagnostic tools and guides supporting the engagement of philanthropy in the SDG process.

Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer

SDG Philanthropy Platform has country-specific work plans and roadmaps for engaging philanthropic institutions and their grantees in the SDG planning and implementation process. The individual pathways and experiences in pilot countries are being captured into the set of guides and diagnostic tools. Knowledge management tools and flagship reports will synthesize the results of policy discussions and lessons from the collaboration, and create analytical linkages with human development. SDG Philanthropy Platform's site SDGfunders.org contains a dashboard of indicators displaying philanthropic activity related to the SDGs. Data is sourced from the grant catalogue that Foundation Center presently maintains. It is complemented by interactive charts, graphs, and visual maps displaying donor and recipient data. Supplemented with official aid figures, these visualizations will allow grantmakers to easily identify specific areas where funding is robust, and where aid is needed.

Coordination mechanisms/governance structure

The initiative is implemented by UNDP, Foundation Center and Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors (RPA) in collaboration with global and local philanthropy networks and experts. At the country level, the Platform is represented by the UNDP country office which connects stakeholders: government, UN system, philanthropy and others, and brings entry points and opportunities for collaboration. At the global level, UNDP deepens philanthropic engagement in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and makes the UN and governments more aware about philanthropic contributions and how best to engage with this non-traditional sector. Spurred by the advocacy work at key sectoral and UN-led discussions, the philanthropic sector has emerged as an active stakeholder in the global conversation around the Post-2015 Development Agenda. At the Addis Ababa Financing for Development Conference, efforts focused on ensuring endorsement in the official text the recognition of philanthropy’s role and its ‘flexibility and capacity for innovation and taking risks and its ability to leverage additional funds’. The Foundation Center brings institutional expertise necessary to deliver on the web product, such as global depository for philanthropic data cross walked to the SDGs - SDGfunders.org. It also builds capacity of organizations to share the data. RPA has many years of experience in working with philanthropists to achieve thoughtful, effective philanthropy. It drives the initiatives by fostering new partnerships and commitments, organizing and participating at cross-sectoral convenings and strategic events.
