Support the Roll-Out of the SDGs in Indonesia
Description/achievement of initiative

To support the Government of Indonesia in rolling out the SDGs, UNDP Indonesia in collaboration with Ford Foundation has committed to provide support to BAPPENAS, the Ministry of National Development Planning, for the national governance of the SDGs. This partnership will support the preparation of the Presidential Instruction for the implementation of the SDGs, the drafting of the National SDGs Roadmap and the establishment of the SDGs Secretariat. At the sub-national level in partnership with BAPPEDA and the Tanoto Foundation, UNDP Indonesia will support the localization of SDGs in Riau Province through mainstreaming, acceleration and policy support.

Implementation methodologies

UNDP Indonesia and the local Provincial Government, with support from the Ford Foundation, the Tanoto Foundation, and the SDG Philanthropy Platform partners, will ensure that the project will be implemented in a participatory manner by involving broad-based multi stakeholders in the overall project cycle. UNDP will particularly ensure that local CSOs representing different marginalized and poor communities will participate in the planning, development, implementation and monitoring-evaluation of the project.

Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer

To reinforce the localized commitment to the SDGs, UNDP will support the Provincial SDGs Secretariat/Bappeda (Provincial Development Planning Agency) to develop a Provincial SDGs Roadmap. This long-term planning document will set milestones, objectives, and strategies to attain the SDGs, and clarify responsibilities of different actors. Additionally, it will provide linkages between the SDGs and the Rencana Pembangunan Jangka Menengah Daerah (RPJMD – Medium Term Development Plan) 2015-2019, increasing the ownership of SDGs. UNDP and the Bappeda/Provincial SDG Secretariat will work together in translating the global and national sustainable development agenda into local development agenda.

Coordination mechanisms/governance structure

The SDGs Secretariat/Bappeda (Provincial Development Planning Agency) will coordinate the implementation of the project. Monitoring and evaluation of the project activities will largely be done by the relevant Local Government Units (Satuan Kerja Perangkat Daerah/SKPD) that are tasked to manage specific SDGs targets. However, the SDGs Secretariat will also invite the participation of NGOs, academia, and other non-state actors, including philanthropy, to monitor the project results. The results of the monitoring and evaluation done internally by the Local Government Units and those done by non-state partners will be consolidated by the Secretariat.
