Community Climate Change Adaptation Assessment (C3A2)
Description/achievement of initiative

Community Climate Change Adaptation Assessment (C3A2) project is being carried out in 5 East African Countries. its goal is to Establish and Enhance Climate Change Risks and adaptive capacities of community groups in Selected Hotspots in East Africa. The project contributes to Strengthening the Resiliency and Sustainability of East Africa economies, Trans-boundary freshwater ecosystems and Communities. The results of this work will be used to facilitate the development of a Lake Victoria Basin Commission (LVBC) Climate Change Action Plan and Strategy thereby enhancing the policy and decision making processes taking into account current and future climate change scenarios &variability

Implementation methodologies

Suswatch Kenya and its implementing partners uses participatory assessment and involves methodological triangulation of qualitative and quantitative approaches in undertaking the project. It also involves participation of a wide spectrum of stakeholders in the project e.g. NGOs, Communities, Special Interest Groups, Government Officers, political representatives etc. All these participants shall give primary information which will be used to benchmark the project and which will form the basis for future performance measurements. This project entails in-depth technical studies across 5 sectors i.e. Agriculture and Food security; Water Resources; Energy and Infrastructure; Health and Human Wellbeing and Terrestrial ecosystems in selected hotspots in East Africa. Besides, it also explores the perceptions of climate risks and adaptation strategies in the identified Hotspots.

Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer

The program has given capacity building a strong footing i.e. Focusing on strengthening the capacities of the implementing Team and partners: Provision of relevant skills in documentation; community–based monitoring and evaluation skills; brokering knowledge and facilitating linkages on issues related to Communities Climate Change Adaptation; Skills on participatory Climate Change Appraisals in selected hotspots, Skills on Approach and Methodology have been facilitatedStrengthening institutional capacity including internal systems, human resources, equipment and knowledge for organizational development purposesCommunities’ Outreach and Exchange visits that can enable Communities and Special interest groups together with other partners to learn from one another (at the National and Regional levels).

Coordination mechanisms/governance structure

The Initiative is being Coordinated by Sustainable Environmental Development Watch but working together with the five East African Partner Organizations which have a strong Environmental and Climate Change Mandates in their respective countries. The Partners have been working together in the management of the project in their countries.The project is being managed by the Community Climate Change Adaptation Coordinator (CCCA) assisted by the Master Trainer based at Suswatch Kenya Offices in Kisumu. The various implementing partners are headed by 2 team leaders who oversees the project’s implementation in the various hotspots. Suswatch Kenya is responsible for planning, documentation, providing technical backstopping and administration of the entire project from start to end, covering all project phases, from initiation through planning, execution and Monitoring and Evaluation of the project.

13.b - Promote mechanisms for raising capacity for effective climate change-related planning and management in least developed countries and small island developing States, including focusing on women, youth and local and marginalized communities
