Sustained Dialogue for a healthy Environment at Ahfad University for Women
Description/achievement of initiative

The Initiative seeks to build relationships across lines of difference. Transform conflict and create a more inclusive campus climate at AUW. It considers ethnicity and ethnic-based violence as the most relevant issue for dialogue on the campus. The evaluations of the first round of the project indicated that: 1. 80% of the participants in the project reported that they feel more comfortable spending time with students from background different than those theirs than before joining the SD project; 2. The SD project gave them the opportunity to interact in a safe space and to know better people from different backgrounds.

Implementation methodologies

The initiative uses the" Sustained Dialogue" methodology which is a conflict transforming methodology using prolonged dialogue to resolve conflicts between the parties to the conflict. The methodology or the SD helped the students to learn the root causes of their campus problems and build better strategies to address these root causes with new allies. SD seeks to transform relationships for the better through meaningful dialogue.SD creates a space for students to convey and exchange not just their opinions about contentious matters, but also the storiesand life experiences behind others’ perspectives. This space makes it possible to build understanding of one another, and also tocreate unlikely friendships in unlikely places.Through Participation in SD students help their peers to increase their abilities about critical thinking, effective listening, knowledge about intergroup relations; increased interest in diversity issues and empathy regarding cultural differences; implementing skills in facilitation and consensus building; engaging in volunteerism, humanitarian service, become Involved in their own local community issues, and initiating diversity initiative in their schools or in future workplace.Four Jobs ;The leader/ manger of the project: Is a staff member who coordinates the activity at the campusLeader: Students from different backgroundsModerators: students who moderates the group sessionsParticipants: Students of the university representing different schools, classes , regions and tribes of Sudan.
