Description/achievement of initiative
The objective of this project is to promote market-facing exporting and processing enterprises, small-scale coconut producers and support services in Caribbean countries to enhance their competitiveness by improving productivity, changing working practices, improving profitability, promoting innovation in the sector and encouraging better information exchange.
Implementation methodologies
The International Trade Centre (ITC), with headquarters in Geneva Switzerland, and the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI), with headquarters in Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago are joining forces with the main stakeholders of the Caribbean’s Coconut sector to improve the competitiveness of coconut industry with the shared objectives of improving market linkages, increased production performance and quality, promoting value addition and better regional coordination. The ultimate goal of the project is to increase food security and reinforce the incomes of small scale farmers in the coconut sector.

Coordination mechanisms/governance structure
This project utilises a participatory approach to promote meaningful coordination and collaboration between key national and regional stakeholders along the coconut value chain. Facilitated by CARDI and ITC, a public-private National Stakeholder Platform has been established in each country that brings together farmers, buyers, entrepreneurs, processors and government agencies to collectively and comprehensively address various issues that confound the sector
