Cap-Net UNDP
Description/achievement of initiative

The Cap-Net global network structure ensures that the best available knowledge and state of the art capacity development delivery (both individual and institutional) is joined in comprehensive packages consisting of training programmes and accessible training manuals. Cap-Net is in a unique position to address capacity needs for implementation of the SDGs and develop capacities for monitoring and reporting on progress. Cap-Net UNDPs dictum is Water Knowledge for All: Empowering Individuals, Enabling Environments suggests that water knowledge should not be a scarce commodity, but should be available at the least possible cost with improved accessibility.

Implementation methodologies

Cap-Net UNDP publishes material in English, French, Portuguese and Spanish, which are translated into several other languages including Arabic, Russian, Chinese, Bahasa, Farsi, Urdu, Hindi, Khmer and Sinhala) by partners and network members based on demand. The Cap-Net website (www.cap-net.org), available in English and Spanish, is a resource for those seeking information on capacity development in IWRM. On average Cap-Net has an outreach to more than 2,000 participants in its face to face training programme with over 10 000 professionals accessing Cap-Net materials remotely through internet downloads and distribution of USB sticks, CDs and hard copies annually.

Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer

By virtue of its structure Cap-Net UNDP enhances North-South, South-South and triangular regional and international cooperation on and access to science, technology and innovation and enhance knowledge-sharing on water sustainable management based on mutually agreed terms, including through improved coordination among existing mechanisms within and outside the UN system.

Coordination mechanisms/governance structure

Cap-Net is one of the delivery mechanisms in the Water and Ocean Governance Programme (WOGP; www.undp.org/water) of UNDP, within the Sustainable Development Cluster of the Bureau for Policy and Programme Support (BPPS). The project is executed through the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), Global Portfolio Services Office, Water and Energy Cluster (GPSO WEC) in Copenhagen and core staff is recruited by UNDP and UNOPS on short term contracts subject to annual renewal. Strategic guidance is sourced from a Management Board consisting of UNDP, UNOPS, financial partners as observers, elected representatives from the regional/country networks, IHE-Delft and GWP as permanent founding members.
