Strengthening Protected Area System of the Komi Republic to Conserve Virgin Forest Biodiversity in the Pechora River Headwaters Region
Description/achievement of initiative

Upscaling of the protected areas system in the Scandinavian and Russian taiga as well as Ural mountain forest tundra
Source: The Federal Supervisory Natural Resources Management Service in Komi Republic
To protect its biodiversity, Russia has established an impressive System of Protected Areas (PA), managed by federal, regional and local agencies that cover about 8.5% of country's area. The proposed project aims to improve the representation of the Scandinavian and Russian taiga and Ural mountain forest tundra in the federal, regional and local system of protected areas. The initiative is centered in the Komi Republic which is a key repository of biodiversity of these ecosystems. (January 2006 - February 2013)
