Description/achievement of initiative
GenUN is a national initiative of UNA-USA to engage and energize young supporters around the work of the United Nations. Through a national network with over 60 university chapters, GenUN facilitates youth engagement, advocacy efforts, education programs, and public events for American youth. UNA-USAs campus chapters offer students an opportunity to lead and advocate in their communities, while the U.S. Youth Observer program provides a connection to the UN for American youth. GenUN represents a new generation of UN advocates and young Americans working toward a bright future.
Implementation methodologies
Becoming a member of UNA-USA links you to a network of like-minded individuals who collectively promote the work of the UN at the grassroots level. The GenUN initiative provides the following:
A forum to voice your support for U.S. engagement at the UN, with a current focus in making the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) a success.
A network of more than 180 UNA-USA chapters and divisions throughout the country comprised of people passionate about the mission of the United Nations.
The opportunity to participate in educational and advocacy events, as well as to meet with elected leaders to increase knowledge of how the UN makes the world a safer place and improves the lives of people everywhere. Key annual events include the Annual Leadership Summit and Members Day at the UN.
Monthly nationwide conference calls with UN Experts on Issues such as Global Health, Empowering Women and Girls, and Sustainable Development.
Access to rewards of United Nations Federal Credit Union membership.
Engagement with UN Foundation Campaigns for global health, adolescent girls, the environment, and more.
Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer
Coordination mechanisms/governance structure
The GenUN campus network of UNA-USA is managed by the United Nations Association-USA, a program of the UN Foundation. Campus leaders apply to become a GenUN campus and start UNA-USA student organizations. There are 4 GenUN Fellows from 4 regions (Northeast, South, West, and Midwest) who provide peer-mentoring for fellow student leaders who are starting chapters.
