Increasing Access to Clean Cooking Energy for Africa
Description/achievement of initiative

GEB has demonstrated that Biofuel Gel for Clean Cookstoves is Economically Viable, Sustainable and Scalable. Not only have we been able to provide a solution to these problems, but also create jobs our for women, this has been demonstrated through our Social Network of over 27,000 Green Entrepreneurs (Women Led Distribution SMEs). We have distributed over 10,000,000 litres of bio-fuel and 550,000 cookstoves Sold in 4 years.

Implementation methodologies

We created a solution by providing an innovative way of cooking - creating a a lasting solution to these problems by producing a bio ethanol cooking gel made from water hyacinth, sawdust and other waste products (Which form Wastes and Threatens the EcoSystem before now and are both abundant environmental and Ocean-Way Wastes especially in Western African) and Kike Green Cookstove, a Simple, yet affordable Cookstove that has received tons of Recognition and Awards with the exclusive mould and design of GEB and official acceptance from the Nigeria Patent registry, tested and certified by the Intertek Standards and the Standard organization of Nigeria (SON). Green Energy Biofuels (SMEFUNDS) demonstrates how Biofuel Gel for Clean Cookstoves is Economically Viable, Sustainable and Scalable. Not only have we been able to provide a solution to these problems, but also create jobs our for women, this has been demonstrated through our Social Network of over 27,000 Green Entrepreneurs (Women Led Distribution SMEs). We have distributed over 8,000,000 litres of bio-fuel and 500,000 cookstoves Sold in 5 years. Our technology and commercialisation of ethanol biogel into a commodity safe for cooking is the first in Nigeria. Not only are we reducing carbon emission, addressing deforestation, health and death issues relating to carbon emissions, but we have empowered more women to start their own businesses part time or full time, creating a source of income for families and improving their livelihoods, giving them the opportunity to work at their own time attending to families and building their Green business

Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer

In the past 5-years, we created an innovative new clean, safe and sustainable biofuel energy solution from water hyacinth, sawdust and other waste products (Which form Wastes and Threatens the EcoSystem before now and are both abundant environmental and Ocean-Way Wastes especially in Western African) and Kike Green Cookstove, a Simple, yet affordable Cookstove that has received tons of Recognition and Awards with the exclusive mould and design of GEB and official acceptance from the Nigeria Patent registry, tested and certified by the Intertek Standards and the Standard organization of Nigeria (SON). Our proprietary technology (Patent: NG/P/2013/252) makes it economically feasible to convert biomass into cellulose ethanol using a combination of thermal, chemical and biochemical techniques. We produce our bio ethanol in Lagos using sawdust and water hyacinth, and have successfully tested the process with other waste biomass. The lignin in the plant fibre is used to drive the process by generating steam and electricity, thus eliminating the need for fossil CO2 sources such as coal or natural gas. Production of ethanol from lignocellulose has the advantage of abundant and diverse raw material compared to sources such as corn and cane sugars, but requires a greater amount of processing to make the sugar monomers available to the microorganisms typically used to produce ethanol by fermentation.

3.4 - By 2030, reduce by one third premature mortality from non-communicable diseases through prevention and treatment and promote mental health and well-being
3.d - Strengthen the capacity of all countries, in particular developing countries, for early warning, risk reduction and management of national and global health risks
Goal 7
7.1 - By 2030, ensure universal access to affordable, reliable and modern energy services
7.2 - By 2030, increase substantially the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix
7.3 - By 2030, double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency
7.a - By 2030, enhance international cooperation to facilitate access to clean energy research and technology, including renewable energy, energy efficiency and advanced and cleaner fossil-fuel technology, and promote investment in energy infrastructure and clean energy technology
7.b - By 2030, expand infrastructure and upgrade technology for supplying modern and sustainable energy services for all in developing countries, in particular least developed countries, small island developing States, and land-locked developing countries, in accordance with their respective programmes of support
Goal 13
13.1 - Strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and natural disasters in all countries
13.3 - Improve education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning
13.b - Promote mechanisms for raising capacity for effective climate change-related planning and management in least developed countries and small island developing States, including focusing on women, youth and local and marginalized communities

* Acknowledging that the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is the primary international,
intergovernmental forum for negotiating the global response to climate change.
Goal 17
