SUNx - Strong Universal Network
Description/achievement of initiative

SUNx is a legacy program for Maurice Strong, Sustainable Development pioneer. Our focus is Climate Change. It is eXistential. If we don’t address it now, it threatens humanity. We have created a systemic approach to Climate Resilience for Travel & Tourism though our Impact-Travel framework. SUNx helps communities align with Paris climate targets and related SDGs. It is partnership focused, guided by a Council of like-minded thinkers and driven from an EU based, not for profit Institute.

Implementation methodologies

SUNx – Strong Universal Network – is an innovation and education system focused on eXistential Climate Resilience through Impact-Travel ~ Measured: Green: 2050 Proof. We are creating a low cost, solar powered, cloud-connected eXchange for monitoring, lifetime learning, innovation and capacity building by communities. By leveraging databases and engaging smart committed young graduates, SUNx provides significant added value within communities - spreading globally, as the network expands to full country cover by 2030. SUNx Centres are the heart of the system. They deliver community support for Impact-Travel and act as focal points for transformation. Managed by a SUNx Curator they bring together multi-media content, partner support services & events focussed on Climate Resilience. Incorporating the SUNx Portal, our global technology platform, which aggregates publicly available multimedia data, they provide lifetime learning from schools to graduate trainees, supported by our SUNx Education Team (SET). The Proof of Concept Centre will be built in the Hoge Kempen National Park in Belgium in 2018 followed by a regional centre in the Seychelles. We have planned a progressive roll-out, for UN regions and Belt & Road states after that. Our game-plan calls for a major thrust in 2020 linked to the International Expo with at least one in every country by 2030, geared to the SDG and Paris Accord programs. We are developing collaborative partnership outreach in the framework of SDG 17.

Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer

SUNx will help local communities align with the global SDG / Paris targets: • Searching databases, trends & innovations, and sharing information for decision-making • Profiling Green Funding, Impact Investment and SME financial support • Hosting Partner Services ranging from Certification to Destination Management • Promoting Lifetime Learning, Training, and Capacity Building Our technology will combine a powerful, cloud connected, Data Management Platform and Content Distribution System, with targeted SUNx services. Aggregating from the massive public domain climate tracking/analysis/video data and enabling inbuilt locally focused analytics. It will be delivered with a commercially based support network of Green Growth partner services such as: impact investment, company certification for Climate/SDG action, mobile augmented reality, Road-mapping, Decision Support Systems, and the like. We will source third party related material that shows advances in carbon reduction techniques/ technologies, data/reports on climate impacts, as well as related industry trends, such as airline low carbon shifts, cruise ships local impacts, surface transport moves to electric vehicles and high speed rail, hotel energy efficiency and local community interface. Our University Network will be expanded from its bases in Australia and Belgium to other institutions around the world. We are creating an Impact-Travel course with material from members of the SUNx Council and collaborators. Our Maurice Strong Legacy Scholarship Program will support smart next generation curators & graduate trainees.

Coordination mechanisms/governance structure

SUNx operates with a lean structure. Governance is provided by the Board of the Green Growth and Travelism Institute (GGTI) not-for-profit network with a small dedicated management. The goal of GGTI is to facilitate SUNx and create a research/academic underpinning to the Impact-Travel vision – with shared principles and learning programs. The Board adheres to the GGTI Bylaws and performs fiduciary and legal duties to include monitoring performance, ensuring creation of a viable business, financial and operating plans, observing the changing regulatory environment, as well as setting policies and strategic directions. We have a small dedicated management team, and an Advisory Council from around the world which includes global thought leaders from the Tourism, Business, Environment & Academic sectors, with diverse backgrounds. SUNx Management is based in Europe. It initially consists of two full-time positions with part-time support as well as key partnerships for manufacture, technology, training and Impact-Travel support services, like SME finance, certification, performance metrics, strategic modelling and the like. It will grow organically with global network expansion. SUNx is supported by an international Advisory Council from around the world (currently 69 members). It includes environmentalists, business leaders, civil society champions, climate scientists, public sector decision makers, technology innovators and communications experts. The Council will expand over time and be the core of our worldwide community of SUNx Champions.
