BARKAT - Prosperity With Dignity
Description/achievement of initiative

Keeping in view the situation of poverty in rural areas of Pakistan, The NGO World launched a Shari'ah compliant, livestock-based poverty reduction initiative "BARKAT" by initially distributing 100 cows and 200 goats to small home based livestock farmers on partnership basis along with provision of services related to animal health. It is a self-sustainable model that creates chain of beneficiaries. BARKAT aims to: • Enhance earning of poor livestock farmers by keeping their dignity intact • Provide technical knowledge and create awareness to get maximum BENEFITS out of cattle • Raise awareness about social issues and connecting them with resources.

Implementation methodologies

BARKAT METHODOLOGY 1- TNW provides domestic cattle(Goats, Cows, Bulls) by signing an agreement with the poor and low-income families (FARMERS) based on specific set of term and conditions for different animals. 2- During the period FARMERS will take care of cattle (fodder/protection) while ORGANIZATION will provide services for animal’s health and raising awareness about social good. 3- After the agreed period animals will be sold and profit/loss will be divided among the FARMERS and ORGANIZATION according to the terms & conditions of an agreement signed. 4- The farming FAMILY will enjoy the PROFIT and hopefully its living condition will be improved while ORGANIZATION will target another poor family and use this basic resource and profit to uplift them. • A scheme/instrument i.e.- ethical alternative to poverty alleviation. • A special kind of partnership, TNW (Rabb-ul-Maal) provides the cattle to the FARMER (mudarib) as the investment. • Both parties share profit and loss

Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer

The NGO World is not only keeping its focus on provision of animals but it is also working on the capacity-building of the partners and for this purpose, it has aligned its BARKAT team to conduct regular sessions with the farmers and community members on different issues. 1. BARKAT started the initiative by arranging a session on Social Mobilization. 2. Regular group meetings with communities are conducted at regular intervals. 3. Awareness Sessions for the taking care of animals and about poverty alleviation have been conducted. 4. Farmers' Training sessions have been conducted. 5. Consultation Meeting have been conducted with the partners.

Coordination mechanisms/governance structure

The NGO World has developed a comprehensive and objectively verifiable beneficiaries identification system to select the most deserving recipients in the most vulnerable locales. Inclusiveness is ensured by conducting effective social mobilization campaign by ensuring gender equality. The BARKAT team carefully analyses the situation, then do the partner's screening and after that animals are handed over to the partner. A doctor is full-time engaged with BARKAT to inspect the animals for any disease and carry the vaccination activities on regular intervals during the partnership agreement. The team conducts the surprise visits to track the health condition of the animal and to check whether the animal is being taken good care of or not and also do the partner is utilizing the resources provided by The NGO World in a sustainable manner.
