Description/achievement of initiative
We want to eliminate the breakdown of communities in the months or years after disaster (natural or man-made), when devastated families find themselves existing on the charity of supportive governments and nations in tented townships surviving on handouts. We want to engage the global creative community to integrate multiple disciplines to develop a wholistic self-sustainable model of rapidly deployable and reusable structures that can be configured to create a hospitable compound capable of housing up to 40-50 families each consisting of 4 people over the medium term (0.5-3years) in a space about the size of a recreational tennis court.
Implementation methodologies
The CIAAD | UN Design Challenge provides an opportunity for professionals and students to exercise their design creativity and utilize skills learned through practice or their current academic development, in the design of a solution with far-reaching appeal.
The CIAAD | UN Design Challenge has been developed as an adjunct to typical course work, where the opportunity to engage with suppliers, vendors and industry members may enhance the development of a design proposal.
The competition rules and regulations will be made available through a purposefully built Facebook page that will also facilitate updates and information sharing.
Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer
Finalist designs will remain the intellectual property of the designers, but are released under written license to the UN for coordination with individual governments for implementation and rollout as required.
Furthermore, they grant the UN & CIAAD the right to use images for promotional purposes. Finally, the entrants indemnify the competition organizers against any intellectual property rights infringements inherent in their designs.
Coordination mechanisms/governance structure
CIAAD(Council of International Accreditation for Architects and Designers) will manage a global design competition to be evaluated by their Advisory Board of internationally renowned experts and creatives.
Committed sponsors will support the fabrication of the prototype and ongoing discussions with partners and governments will seek the necessary support to rollout these units to the worlds most needed disaster zones.
