Contributing to build a low-carbon society, a circular economy, and a work style innovation using "Next Generation Managed Print Services (MPS) utilizing reconditioned devices".
Introduction

Fuji Xerox has been contributing to build a sustainable society.
In 1995, Fuji Xerox started collecting, reusing and recycling Fuji Xerox’s used print devices with the cooperation of client companies and recycling partners.
In 2015, Fuji Xerox began to use energy-efficient reconditioned devices which were constructed with reused components about 80%, when we offer "Next Generation Managed Print Services".
This service Fuji Xerox provides optimum printing environment and transform the work style using analysis of installed devices and business processes.Reducing the amount of resource used and the number of devices and printed-pages results to the reduction of CO₂ emissions.

Objective of the practice

Fuji Xerox has been contributing to build a sustainable society by providing energy-efficient printing devices and responsible papers.

In 1995, Fuji Xerox established a Company-wide Product Recycle Policy “Promoting Reuse of Resources for infinite Zero Landfill” and started collecting used devices for reusing and recycling.

Fuji Xerox have been collecting used devices from many client companies who agree with our Product Recycle Policy.
Fuji Xerox have also been collaborating with many recycling partners who have advanced recycle technologies and engage in environmental conservation.

Fuji Xerox guarantee the same quality for reused parts and new parts by applying strict standards for parts selection. To increase guaranteed reused parts, Fuji Xerox have been developing recycle technologies, such as cleaning and screening.

Fuji Xerox also established the “Reuse Design Guideline” to confirm introduction of reused parts into new product design processes. Standardization and reusable design methodologies are the key factors of this guideline.

Through these efforts, in 2003, Fuji Xerox produced "reconditioned devices" which were constructed with about 70 percent (in terms of mass) of reused components and were guaranteed the same quality as a brand-new product.Thereafter, we have been continuing "zero waste (resource recycling rate: over 99.5%)" in Japan since 2001.

From 2004, Fuji Xerox have been providing the "Managed Print Services (MPS)", that will support realize Fuji Xerox’s Mission Statement “Build an environment for the creation and effective utilization of knowledge".When applying MPS to our customer, Fuji Xerox continuously communicate with the client companies' executives about our services values that optimize printing environment and help workstyle transformation. This enables us to build a concrete relationship between our customer about environment management.

In 2015, Fuji Xerox started to provide "reconditioned devices" which were constructed with about 80 percent (in terms of mass) of reused components in MPS to increase the market introduction rate of "reconditioned devices", and to contribute to low carbon society, circular economy, and work style innovation.

Fuji Xerox believe that our activities will contribute to the SDGs target 8-2, 8-4,12-2, 12-5, 13-3, 15-3, and 17-7 comprehensively.

Key stakeholders and partnerships

Fuji Xerox have been trying to collect more used devises from client companies to increase our reuse and recycle efforts. To achieve this, we have been gathering support from our customers to agree with our Product Recycle Policy and to return their used devices to us.
We also have been proposing “Next Generation Managed Print Services (MPS) utilizing reconditioned devices” to our customers’ executives to contribute to a low carbon society, a circular economy, and a work style innovation.
Furthermore, Fuji Xerox have been collaborating with many recycling partners in Japan who have the latest recycle technologies and willingness to engage in environmental conservation. Through collaboration, we have developed new plastic recycling technology.

Implementation of the Project/Activity

Fuji Xerox has been contributing to build a sustainable society. In 1995, Fuji Xerox started collecting used devices to reuse and recycle, and have expanded its activities. From 2001, Fuji Xerox have continued "zero waste (resource recycling rate: over 99.5%)" in Japan. Now, Fuji Xerox produce “reconditioned devices” where at about 80 percent (in terms of mass) of components are reused and serviced to the level of brand-new products.

In 2015, to increase the market introduction rate of “reconditioned devices”, and to contribute to a low carbon society, a circular economy, and a work style innovation with client companies, Fuji Xerox began to integrate and evolve our “Managed Print Service (MPS) business” and “reconditioned devices”.

Fuji Xerox proposed values of this service to our client companies’ executives, and Fuji Xerox have now offered this service to 89 business groups from FY 2015 to FY 2017.

In this service, Fuji Xerox firstly conduct an assessment. Our special staff members analyze the volume of printing, frequency, power consumption, and other printing activity information in an office to visualize the working conditions of each multi-function device and printer.

In addition to this actual usage data, Fuji Xerox conduct questionnaire surveys and process analyses to offer a process efficiency improvement plan that includes paper usage reduction and enhanced productivity.

Then, Fuji Xerox offers the optimum printing environment by reviewing the installed devices and models as well as their layout in the office.

Fuji Xerox also offers a new work style by converting paper-based processes into digital processes.

Reducing the amount of resource used and the number of devices and printed-pages results to the reduction of CO₂ emissions.

After operation begins, by regularly managing reviews of monthly reports and improvement results, Fuji Xerox maintain absolute optimum environment and achieve various quality improvements.

In this way, our client companies and Fuji Xerox have together been continuously contributing to building a low-carbon society, circular economy, and work style innovation.

Results/Outputs/Impacts

Fuji Xerox offered the “Next Generation Managed Print Services (MPS) utilizing reconditioned devices” to 89 business groups from FY 2015 to FY 2017. This service contributed to the optimization of output environment, energy-saving, resource-saving, and the efficiency of business process, which resulted in a reduction of 4,466 tons-CO₂ per year.

Enabling factors and constraints

1. Partnership with customers who have the same vision to building a sustainable society.
2. Product Recycle Policy to standardize reuse device design.
3. Collaboration with recycling partners who have the latest recycle technologies and willingness to engage in environmental conservation.

Sustainability and replicability

Fuji Xerox has been contributing to build a low-carbon society, a circular economy, and a work style innovation by collaborating with client companies who have the same vision as us, and partners who have the latest recycle technologies.Regardless of country or business type, many companies and organizations use printing devices. The combination of "service business" and "reconditioned devices” can be applied in various fields and has universality.

Conclusions

Fuji Xerox has been contributing to building a sustainable society.

In 1995, Fuji Xerox established a Company-wide “Product Recycle Policy” and started collecting, reusing, and recycling Fuji Xerox’s used print devices with the cooperation of client companies and recycling partners.

From 2010, Fuji Xerox have continued "zero waste (resource recycling rate: over 99.5%)" in Japan.Although it is a difficult approach, such as different laws depending on the country, as a company, Fuji Xerox recognizes its importance and strive to work on it.

In 2015, to increase the market introduction rate of “reconditioned devices”, and to contribute to a low carbon society, a circular economy, and a work style innovation, when offering “Next Generation Managed Print Services”, Fuji Xerox began to use energy-efficient reconditioned devices, where about 80 percent of components are reused.

In this service, Fuji Xerox analyzes installed devices and business processes, then offer optimum printing environment, and transforms customers work style. Reducing the amount of resource used and the number of devices and printed-pages results to the reduction of CO₂ emissions.

Combination of “reconditioned devices” and “Managed Print Services” enhances the contribution to building a sustainable society. This was made possible by collaborating with client companies and recycling partners. Fuji Xerox, together with stakeholders, will continue to contribute towards a better and sustainable environment and workplace.
