An Introduction to Global Literacies for Sustainable Development
Description/achievement of initiative

This project aims to introduce the Sustainable Development Goals to primary and middle school students in Mainland China and build the capacity of local schools for teachers to engage in education for sustainable development initiatives. These aims are achieved through the development of student and teacher textbooks, weekly classes to learn about and take action on the SDGs, and professional learning opportunities and teacher training for local educators. Teaching and learning data are collected through observations and teacher and student surveys at the conclusion of each chapter in the textbooks and inform teacher professional development.

Implementation methodologies

This project is carried out in five steps: 1. Curriculum Development - With support from the World's Largest Lesson, teacher and student textbooks were developed for use in local public primary and secondary schools in Simplified Chinese. 2. Teacher Development - Relevant teachers receive weekly training on how to deliver the curriculum and integrate the SDGs into their teaching. All teachers receive an introduction to the Sustainable Development Goals. 3. Classroom Observation and Data Collection - All classes are observed by a school administrator and teachers receive feedback on their pedagogy. After each class, teachers and students complete a survey about the course including what they learned, which activities were the most engaging, and recommendations for improving the course. 4. Reporting - Based on observation and survey data, semi-annual reports are submitted to relevant district and municipal education bureau officials. 5. Further Project Development - Based on observation, survey data, and relevant expert input, additional projects are developed to continue growing the catalogue of available teaching and learning SDG resources for local educators.
