The Green Deal is a voluntary agreement between the state and the business sector. The aim is to promote sustainable development goals. Parties that make an agreement commit to certain shared goals, monitoring these goals and implementing measures for achieving them. The agreement can be used as a steering instrument instead of legislation.
There are thus far three Green Deals:
- Deal between Ministry for the Environment and Finnish Commerce Federation to decrease usage of plastic bags
- Deal between the Ministry of Transport and Communications and Finnish Central Organization for Motor Trades and Repairs to decrease CO2 emissions from traffic and
-Deal between Ministry for the Environment and Finnish Environmental Industries to increase recycling of oil waste.
After the parties have made the Green Deal, individual companies will join it by making their individual commitment to it. The commitments are given to public web page sitoumus2050.fi, provided by the Prime Minister’s Office where the public authorities together with other actors make a commitment to promote sustainable development in their activities.
The companies have to choose at least to concrete measurable actions mentioned in the Green Deal and report their progress yearly.
From the three deals already made the expected outcomes are:
- To decrease the usage of single used plastic bags to 40 bags per person until the end of 2025.
- Decrease the average CO2 emissions for new cars at least 4 per cents each year.
- Increase vehicles that can use high amounts of bio fuels in heavy transportation
- Promote vehicles suited for alternative fuels so that at least 25 per cent of all new cars can run with alternative fuels in 2025
- Increase the recycling of oil waste from 74 % to 80 % until 2020
