SDGs for SCV
Description

Sustainable Development Goals for Santa Clarita Valley (SDGs for SCV) is a student-led project initiative that seeks to implement the 2030 United Nations SDGs into our community by curating creative solutions to local problems under each goal. Our unique position as students in a largely unreceptive city which has historically marginalized impoverished people galvanized us to take action. Santa Clarita Valley passed Ordinance 14, a law dedicated towards driving homeless people off the streets - meaning homeless people could not sleep in public view on public streets or buildings, despite providing only one permanent shelter, which was only open 6 months out of the year with limited space. Thus, we decided to supplement the lack of resources by planning and executing a pop-up shop, completely free of charge, with clothing items, hygiene products, household items, food, and educational supplies sourced from members of the community. We were able to successfully collect thousands of items with partnerships with local non-profits such as Help the Children and Family Promise and reached out to attendees through the Santa Clarita Domestic Violence Center and Bridge to Home. After distributing over 2,000 items to low-income homeless members of Santa Clarita Valley, we reached out to the Greater Los Angeles Area in Crenshaw and partnered with a local NGO to set up another pop-up shop for their community. Through our 3 pop-up shops, we have collected over 10,000 items and served 700 people. The organizing and planning for Oasis pop-up shops were completely run and led by students and have thus demonstrated our ability to effectively reach out to and partner with organizations for the goals. We will utilize this ability to network and efficiently collaborate in furthering our accomplishments of the goals.
We will utilize partnerships in order to maximize the effectiveness of our practice in carrying out these goals while also benefiting our partnership countries. As a student-based group, we are well aware that our own resources are not enough to solve problems on our own, which has encouraged us to build coalitions with existing non-profits and NGOs within our community, not only strengthening our communal network, but also our communication and organizational skills. We also plan on reaching out to school districts within our community in order to implement the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals in their core curriculum. We will go beyond students and talk to the adults in the community to take individual action to pledge to abiding by the UN SDGs. In addition to partnering with local non-profits, we also plan on working within local government by networking with our Congresswoman, state Assemblywoman, and school board representatives to further getting our city involved with the UN SDGs.
Ultimately, we hope to be part of the decade of change and work alongside other countries in achieving these goals. We aim to leave lasting impact on our community and for the common welfare of the future of the residents of Santa Clarita Valley and our global community as a whole.
