Since 1998, Tsinghua University has committed itself to building the "Green University", by disseminating the concept of Sustainable Development, researching science and technology, and building resources saving and environmental friendly campus as demonstration. From 1998 to now, in total 270 different courses related to Sustainable Development have been set up in Tsinghua University, involving more than 20 departments and accepted by tens of thousands of students. Many departments have conducted researches related to Sustainable Development and have won more than 1000 awards of provincial level and above.

Active efforts have been made for energy conservation and pollution reduction to support the rapid development of the university in a relatively slowest way of energy consumption increase. Green coverage of campus is up to 57% with 1280 kinds of trees. In 2011,Tsinghua University Centennial Celebration was around the corner, the presidents from more than 130 domestic and foreign well-known universities gathered in Tsinghua University and planted the trees were named after the school name which composed the Centennial Garden, and expressed the common aspiration of sustainable development talent cultivation.The development of "Green University" has supported a number of teachers and students firmly implementing and spreading Sustainable Development concept, and this is also the key force for us to fulfill the Rio +20 obligations. Recycling the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment.–Being positive in the international communication and cooperation, participanting in projects such as the “Environmental education and training” and sharing the achievements.
