Social Shifters in Higher Education
Description/achievement of initiative

A program to inspire, engage and develop students as social entrepreneurs through: A. Providing the inspiration, tools and learning to develop active citizenship and entrepreneurial skills among students. B. Enabling each institution to deliver a positive social impact as students, faculty and staff use social entrepreneurship as a tool to tackle pressing community challenges. C. Working with institutions committed to the global good, building their capacity and providing them with the tools to graduate the next generation of changemakers.

Implementation methodologies

The program brings together a customised package of online campaigns, digital learning and student support to champion social entrepreneurship across the higher education sector. It works with each institution to support students, faculty and staff.\\r\\n\\r\\nThe three key elements of the program are:\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n1. INSPIRATION\\r\\n\\r\\nInspiring students to make social entrepreneurship a vital part of their academic experience and future career through:\\r\\n\\r\\n- Localised social media campaigns to target students in each institution.\\r\\n- Student-led screenings of the award-winning documentary the Social Shift. \\r\\n- Collaborative events bringing staff, student societies and social entrepreneurs together.\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n2. ENGAGEMENT\\r\\n\\r\\nEngaging students with Social Shifters, a pioneering digital space providing access to personalised bite-sized e-learning, inspiring stories and a global community of support for students:\\r\\n\\r\\n- Personalised student and staff onboarding to our Social Shifters platform (SocialShifters.co).\\r\\n- Access to bite-sized, video-based e-learning, stories and downloadable tools.\\r\\n- Platform customisation and white labelling for each institution.\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n3. STARTUP SUPPORT\\r\\n\\r\\nEmbedding high-quality e-learning into existing university enterprise programs, enabling new student-led social ventures through:\\r\\n\\r\\n- Access to over 80 specially designed modular e-learning courses for social entrepreneurs.\\r\\n- Support to implement ‘Steps to Startup’ - a world-leading digital social start-up program.\\r\\n- Opportunities for students to build peer-to-peer networks of support.

Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer

The program has put in place a number of arrangements for capacity-building and technology transfer:\\r\\n\\r\\n- Embedding of the Social Shifters program into each universities corporate objectives, entrepreneurship support strategies and existing curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular support for student social entrepreneurs. \\r\\n\\r\\n- An awareness- raising program for faculty and staff to help understand the potential of social entrepreneurship together with assistance to embed digital inspiration and learning into communications, curriculum, careers and enterprise support.\\r\\n\\r\\n- Engagement and support for student unions, societies, and clubs to enable them to understand the potential to use business as a tool for change and embed knowledge and support into their activities.\\r\\n\\r\\n- Customisation of the digital Social Shifters platform for each institution, enabling them to combine the courses and resources available to student social entrepreneurs into a single coherent digital offering.\\r\\n\\r\\nSocial Shifters is now seeking partners to share learning and extend the program to other countries.

Coordination mechanisms/governance structure

The program is being piloted in Scotland before roll out to other countries. \\r\\n\\r\\nThe pilot action in Scotland is being co-ordinated by Community Enterprise in Scotland (CEIS). Operating as a charity, CEIS is the UK's oldest and largest social enterprise support agency.\\r\\n\\r\\nThe multi-agency partnership includes:\\r\\n\\r\\n- Social Shifters - a non-profit that provides a digital platform (SocialShifters.co) and content for young and aspiring social entrepreneurs\\r\\n- The Social Enterprise Institute - the world's online school for social enterprise\\r\\n- Firstport - the social enterprise startup agency for Scotland\\r\\n\\r\\nThe program is working with all higher education institutions in Scotland.\\r\\n\\r\\nThe pilot phase of the project is being supported by the Scottish Government over two years.
