Description/achievement of initiative
The Swarovski Waterschool was founded in 2000 with the goal to empower children and their communities around the world to become water ambassadors by providing tools and training to address their local water challenges. As the Swarovski Waterschool has grown and expanded, programs have been implemented along rivers in over 2,500 schools in 8 countries.
Implementation methodologies
The Swarovski Waterschool operates within watershed areas of the world´s major rivers of the Danube, Ganges, Yangtze, Nile, Amazon, Chao Phraya, Mississippi and Parramatta in eight countries: Australia, Austria, Brazil, China, India, Thailand, Uganda and USA. Since its inception the Swarovski Waterschool has educated more than 740,000 students (at least 20 hours of training) and engaged and trained 15,000 teachers at more than 2,500 schools globally. The Swarovski Waterschool strongly believes that global water challenges must be addressed by empowering children with the knowledge and resources they need to lead change. With the support of local partners the Waterschool reaches children between the ages of eight and 18 and through them their families and communities, improving access to safe and reliable sources of water and adequate sanitation while also providing the tools and education for the next generation. Custom lesson plans teach the importance of water and sanitation in the greater context of health education and are designed to integrate into other subject areas such as science and social studies. Swarovski Waterschool programs engage with classroom teachers to empower children with the knowledge and skills necessary to take local actions and improve local environments. Lack of access to clean drinking water represents one of the most significant barriers to health and development in many communities. Swarovski Waterschool works to identify, establish, and implement solutions that provide clean water to local schools and communities, solving both long- and short- term water related challenges. Proper sanitation facilities and hygiene education in schools promote healthy life skills, improved learning, and fewer absences from school - especially for girls. Alongside traditional education programs, Swarovski Waterschool also hosts workshops for children around the world and participates in global Social Action Campaigns.
