17 Voices for 17 Goals - Sustainable Development Awareness Raising Initiative
Description

On the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the adoption of the 2030 Agenda and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals on 25 September 2020, Global Responsibility, the Austrian Platform for development and humanitarian aid currently representing the interests of 35 member organisations active in the fields of development cooperation, development education and policy work, as well as humanitarian aid and sustainable global economic, social and ecological development, initiated this project to raise awareness of the 2030 Agenda and its 17 goals for sustainable development. Since the 2030 Agenda and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals are not yet well known in Austria, specifically among the young people, we developed an online campaign with the objective to share positive messages about the 17 goals through videos provided by famous people in Austria. In sum, we could produce nineteen videos, one statement was even given by the President of Austria, H.E. Mr. Alexander Van der Bellen on the importance of the 2030 Agenda, and eighteen more videos by Austrian celebrities were produced. We are also proud that we received two videos on the important issue of gender equality (SDG 5). In each video, a famous Austrian person talks about one SDG and why, in their personal view, achieving this goal is of great importance. We collected videos by the following celebrities: current President of Austria, H.E. Alexander van der Bellen; former President of Austria, H.E. Mr. Heinz Fischer, now Co-Chair of the Ban Ki-Moon Center for Global Citizens, one of the most loved Presidents in Austria; Ms. Monika Langthaler, initiator of R20 - Regions of Climate Action in Austria, former politician of the Green Party and Member of the European Parliament; Mr. Franz Fischler, former EU Commissioner for Agriculture and President and founder of the Forum Alpbach; the Comedian trio called "die Staatskünstler", provide a funny take on the importance of SDG 14 and saving the sea; Mr. Georg Kapsch, former President of the Federation of Austrian Industries; Dr. Meryn, university professor and famous medical doctor in Austria; Mr. Josef Hader, comedian and actor, well known for his support to social causes; Ms. Vea Kaiser, young female author with a distinctive voice for women's rights; Mr. Manuel Rubey, well known young actor, singer and comedian; Ms. Eva Rossmann, famous author of numerous books and supporter of women's rights in Austria; Mr. Christoph Neumeyer, President of the Federation of Austrian industries; Ms. Chris Lohner, actress and moderator, well known for her support activities for development in Africa; Ms. Erika Pluhar, one of Austria's most loved actresses and author; Ms. Yasmo, young female singer and rapper; Ms. Margit Fischer, former first lady of Austria; Mr. Cornelius Obonya, actor and author; Mr. Karl Markovics, actor, author and film director, active for social causes in Austria; Mr. Erich Fenninger, President of the international cooperation NGO “Volkshilfe”. Dissemination: In September 2020, we published one video a day on our website, social media channels and our newsletter. Via our Facebooksite alone, we reached more than 25,000 people.

Expected impact

Results of the dissemination: With the dissemination of the 19 videos on our websites, newsletters, social media channels and youtube platform, we reached more than 35,000 people during the campaign. With the assistance of our member organisations and associated members as well as through the platform of SDG Watch Austria, with 205 civil society organisations, we were able to triple the amount of people reached that we envisaged and could reach out to more people who would normally not watch videos or content on development cooperation or humanitarian action. Especially through the youtube channel and the social media campaign, we could reach more young people than originally planned. We could even present the initiative as a best practice example at the high-level event of the Ban Ki-Moon Center for Global Citizens in Vienna in November 2020. We strive to continue to disseminate the 19 videos on the 2030 Agenda and the 17 SDGs throughout the next year to increase our reach to people.

The expected impact of the 19 videos includes:

- the 2030 Agenda and the 17 sustainable development goals are well known throughout Austria, especially among young people.
- young people, specifically under the age of 30, increase their contributions to the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals
- people within our network of more than 205 civil society organisation members strengthen their contribution to the 2030 Agenda and the sustainable development goals
