Description/achievement of initiative
The Morphbag by GSK is a versatile handbag solution in a set of 3 colour-coordinated vegan items. The concept has its foundations based on contribution to sustainability from 3 angles:1.SLOW FASHION: Season-less: morphs with seasons & wardrobe, #100wears, Time-less &versatile (made to last and passed on). 2. SUSTAINABLE: Reduce demand for cattle farming to lower CO2 footprint by supplying a look-alike replacement to bovine leather. Reforestation Partner of ONE TREE PLANTED. 3. VEGAN: PETA certified (100% PU) that has been coated and textured to have the same pebble grain as cow leather to substitute bovine leather.
Implementation methodologies
Being still in the start up phase and being a slow fashion brand, we have only 1 collection and have only manufactured once at the above location. In the development phase before the launch of the current collection, we were working on SDG 12, SDG 15 and SDG 17.Ethical – Animal Welfare – Vegan-Friendly – Premium Faux Leather SDG 15. Manufactured in China with highest precision and skilled craftsmanship in a sustainable and eco-friendly operated factory SDG 12. Imported, thus increasing the exports of developing countries SDG 17.11. As mentioned above, we still hold stock and are still marketing the original Morphbag concept .However, we have new designs in the pipeline that are based on the same principles and the same SDGs but we are aiming at improving them. The Morphbag will remain a cruelty-free product with the aim to preserve life on earth and fight against deforestation in connection with farming, We will also continue to plant trees to combat deforestation. The new product designs are aiming at improving our SDG 12. In our development phase, we are looking at alternative leathers that are bio-degradable but yet lasting as still want the handbags to have durability comparable to traditional leather as - like with the first product - our goal is to bring to the market a like-for-like replacement for leather that is cruelty-free and are thus still working with SDG 15.We are presently testing apple leather and cactus leather. We are currently making more progress with the cactus leather as the cactus leather manufacturer appears to be very transparent with its production practices. We are still looking for a manufacturer and will seek help with Common Objective as we have not yet managed to identify a suitable factory, We are pursuing SDG 17.11 and would ideally want to produce in the same country we will be sourcing our material in order to keep our supply chain as tight as possible.
Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer
We are a very small - a one woman business - and we outsource manufacturing. Therefore, the selection process will involve due diligence on technology and practices based on our SDGs. We are still researching the most suitable materials (along the above mentioned criteria) and the factory will need to be audited. The current challenge is how to identify a factory that upholds sustainable practices with standards and regulations varying from country to country. We hope to be able to find support with Common Objective.
Coordination mechanisms/governance structure
The concept was developed, as described above, with the afore mentioned sustainability contributing elements, The Morphbag by GSK was launched only 25 months ago.GSK Bespokedesigns Ltd is partnered with a factory in Guangzhou, in Southern China, north west of Hong Kong. The factory is SGS audited. The manufacturer shares The Morphbag by GSK values and the factory upholds strict human rights standards across its operations. Regular audits are run to ensure standards are maintained. Business practices, working conditions and safety of labour, fair wages and working hours, are monitored throughout the production process. The Morphbag supply chain is simple and direct. Once manufactured, the products are shipped directly, via DHL Cargo (DHL GOGREEN SOLUTIONS) to The Morphbag office, where the items are stocked, packaged and distributed directly to customers, again using DHL.
