Description/achievement of initiative
To keep clothes out of landfills for as long as possible by repairing, cleaning and reselling, thus directly elongating garment lifecycle.
Implementation methodologies
Mara Hoffman sends gently used and damaged garment, as well as unwanted apparel and textiles The Renewal Workshop that then turns them into Renewed garments, upcycled materials or recycling feedstock. To date, The Renewal Workshop has cumulatively diverted more than 78,000 pounds of textile waste from landfills. Instead of discarding damaged, Mara Hoffman garments, we send them to the Renewal Workshop to be inspected, cleaned, repaired and returned to us for resale. This partnership helps increase the longevity of garments.
Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer
So far Mara Hoffman has sent over 300 pounds of damaged Mara Hoffman garments to the Renewal Workshop to be repaired, and resold. The Renewal Workshop continues to expand its capacity and extend its bandwidth to use this model across the entire apparel industry and is open to taking on more partnerships.
Coordination mechanisms/governance structure
Initiative is governed by Mara Hoffman asking customers to send in lightly used or damaged clothing, as well as Mara Hoffman establishing criteria for used or damaged garments from our warehouse.
