The Sustainable Fashion Collective
Description/achievement of initiative

An online educational platform that provides holistic guidance and expert advice on topics surrounding the fashion and textiles industry in order to build responsible businesses that work for people, planet and profit.

Implementation methodologies

Each month a new Masterclass is launched live on the platform website, with access to all previous Masterclasses. Each Masterclass also has follow on links, lessons and reading, along with a bookmark feature so that Professional Members of the platform are able to direct their learning. Within each Masterclass are approximately 10 lessons; these make up key questions, brand case studies (in the form of interviews) and technical knowledge (via tutorials). The platform has been developed so that lessons may appear in various Masterclasses in order that a user gain holistic guidance.\r\n\r\nWe are working on how to add features such as homework that will allow a fashion entrepreneur to guide themselves through the Masterclasses without feeling overwhelmed, and be able to understand how the information they have learnt can be put into practice.\r\n\r\nWe have a private Facebook group for Members to network with each other and ask questions, though we are constantly gaining feedback on if this should be moved to another platform such as Slack or LinkedIn to suit the breadth of audience we have.\r\n\r\nOur social media channels are very important in sharing the lessons and Masterclasses, along with industry news. We also operate a blog that allows us to take key points from Masterclasses and industry news that will allow entrepreneurs to feel up-to-date with their industry.

Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer

Personal group consultations, private feedback check-in calls and opportunity to network via private groups allows our Professional Members to feel part of a network. They have the opportunity to ask questions, give feedback, receive industry critique and stay up to date with research and development in their field.\r\n\r\nThe aim is to build our audience so that more can learn from the expert lessons we have curated, and create a network of micro-small-medium businesses that are implementing responsible practices.

Coordination mechanisms/governance structure

An online-only subscription based platform. Upgraded "Professional" Members gain access to a monthly Masterclass and all archived Masterclasses on topics surrounding running a creative fashion business, how to implement sustainable sourcing, building confidence in running an ethical brand and understanding what this means for the world.\r\n\r\nThe audience is connected via social media, and we take a personal approach to checking in with all Members to assess their goals and values, and keep them on track. Professional Members also gain access to exclusive events including group consulations with industry experts, live panel discussions, and online and in-person networking sessions. They also receive partner discounts so that we can create a community of like-minded businesses driving change.\r\n\r\nFor 2021, we integrated a plan to introduce and dive into each Sustainable Development Goal as a separate Masterclass each. The direction is related to fashion and textiles, with an underpinning of the SDG targets so that fashion and creative businesses gain the grounding of the importance of such a goal. We work with guest experts and industry professionals to gain case studies, insight and direct advice that fashion entrepreneurs can use to develop their business.\r\n\r\nThe initiative is a sister business to our online textile shop, Offset Warehouse, that provides retail of ethical and sustainable textiles. This is a helpful platform to create conversation, build our audience and put into action our own goals and targets.
