Description/achievement of initiative

The Sustainability Plan is developed with reference to the following guiding principles: - consolidate the presence of sustainability in education and research; - integrate environmental and sustainable development component in the management activities; - to involve the entire university community in the process of institutional sustainability; - project the principles, values and actions of university sustainability in our social and territorial environment.Education, Culture and Sports. Government of SpainDuring the last few decades, and especially in recent years, UB has carried out numerous initiatives in line with sustainability, both individually by members of the university community more committed to the environment, and by the institution itself through the governing bodies and administrative units with responsibilities in this area. After creating the Environment Committee in 1996, and a technical unit of environmental management in 1998, sustainable development was incorporated in the Statute, approved by the Senate of the University of Barcelona on May 21st 2003, thus- proclaiming the orientation of education and research into the culture of peace, social and human progress based on human rights, and respect to the environment and sustainable development;- establishing a commitment to promote in the curricula subjects relating to the environment and sustainable development;- defining the responsibilities of departments, faculties, colleges and research institutes in compliance with environmental regulations, and- creating a Commission to ensure that the University shall respect the criteria of sustainability and environmental protection in all its activities. To this end, the Commission will establish a sustainability action program of the University and will submit to the University Senate an annual report on its implementation. The Sustainability Plan developed by the Commission combines short-term actions, easy implementation and almost immediate results with long-range actions whose results will be reflected on the long-term. The Sustainability Plan is developed with reference to the following guiding principles:- consolidate the presence of sustainability in education and research;- integrate environmental and sustainable development component in the management activities;- to involve the entire university community in the process of institutional sustainability;- project the principles, values and actions of university sustainability in our social and territorial environment.Additionally, these principles are subject to the holistic vision of the university sustainability, which requires facing the integration of environmental component as value decisions of the institution in the social and economic frameworks, and adopt a systemic both in the university activities (education, research and management), and in its interaction with society.
