Description/achievement of initiative
The focus of this marine sanctuary initiative is on: Integrating with other Pacific Island Countries in furthering the Mixed Management Approach (Mixed Plate Approach) envisioned by the 45th Pacific Islands Forum in its Palau Oceans Declaration and incorporating appropriate management, transition and set-aside strategies appropriate to Palau's National interests;Palau sees its Marine Sanctuary as a contribution to Pacific regional conservation and seeks positive consideration from its neighbors and partners for its contributions. Palau envisions its Marine Sanctuary Initiative as a model for other nations and an opportunity for international partners to collaborate to enforce the closure and support other countries to follow suit.
Implementation methodologies
Palau will maintain an active involvement in regional fisheries organizations and will continue to strongly support regional fisheries partners in their pursuit of fisheries development aspirations and equitable fisheries conservation measures. Within this context, Palau has established the goals and strategies in support of the establishment of the Marine Sanctuary. To name a few, Palau seeks to develop a fisheries development vision that supports the development of national fishing opportunities and intends to develop a new and strengthened surveillance and enforcement strategy to monitor and enforce the Marine Sanctuary and Fishing Zone.
Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer
Partners will provide capacity building support such as promotion of the initiative, legal supportPartners will provide technology transfer such as surveillance and monitoring for example.
Coordination mechanisms/governance structure
Palau seeks partnership to further develop management and planning frameworks. This initiative is coordinated by the Office of the President in support by the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Tourism.
