Reducing carbon and flaring intensity: expanding access to modern energy services
Description/achievement of initiative

Eni commits to: Reduce carbon intensity of hydrocarbon production; Reduce gas flaring intensity of upstream activities; Use associated gas, especially where flared, to improve access to modern energy.

Implementation methodologies

Eni has devised a very ambitious investment plan to fund its goals towards Sustainable Energy for All:

4 billion Euros are earmarked to achieve the carbon and gas flaring intensity targets through valorisation of associated gas. All new projects will be developed in a way that totally avoids flaring of gas.

In order to reducing flaring intensity Eni recovers associated gas by means of deploying every possible solutions from reservoir re-injection and exportation to local markets distribution, liquefaction for export and power plants feeding. The latter solutions, along with gas valorisation in transition and developing countries, are the core pillar of Eni's commitment to improve access to modern energy services in geographies where operates.

In order to improve access to modern energy services in Nigeria and the Republic of Congo Eni is using and will keep on using associated gas to fuel power plants whose functioning, rehabilitation, establishment has been facilitated by Eni. In the Republic of Congo, where Eni has already invested 1 billion Euros to support local electricity network, 26 million Euros are earmarked to rehabilitate and extend the Pointe-Noire's low voltage lines and ensure new connections to 140.000 people.

During the next four years will work to improve the use of associated gas in the major operated development projects in Algeria, Angola, Congo, Iraq, Italy, Nigeria, Norway and Turkmenistan.

Goal 7
2012
Flaring Intensity: Achieving on-shore zero gas flaring in the Republic of Congo
2013
Access to modern energy services: Rehabilitating and extending Pointe-Noires low tension electricity network to enabling new connections for 140.000 people
2014
Flaring Intensity: Recovering from flaring 95% of gas associated to oil production in Nigeria (recovered gas equal to 50% in 2000)
2015
Supporting the scale-up of Global Gas Flaring Reduction membership and activities
2015
Carbon Intensity: Reducing by 40% compared to 2010 GHG emissions per ktoe of net operated hydrocarbons production, saving around 7 million tons of CO2eq
2015
Flaring Intensity: Reducing of 80% in the volume of gas sent to flaring envisaged in 2015 compared with the volume burnt in 2007, recovering more then 5 million tons per year of gas from flaring
