Description/achievement of initiative

Since 2009 a spontaneous working group, Unidea, integrated by administrative staff members, professors and researchers, was established, to promote initiatives towards a Green campus (http://www.unisi.it/ateneo/unidea ). Some of the proposals of the group (on water supply, waste minimization, paper use minimization, recycling and reuse) were approved by the University board of administration on April 14th, 2011. Since 2011, the University of Siena established a Network called Ne.S.So.(Network Siena Sustainability) , with the purpose to implement its commitments to teach sustainable developments. The Network has its website, where activities and news could be found (www.unisi.it/nesso ).

Implementation methodologies

Between 2012 and 2015, among the actions to be promoted, there is the launch of a special course on sustainability, to be suggested to the inclusion in all the study programs of the students of the University of Siena. We are exploring also the possibility to establish a PhD program on sustainability. As for the research, we are working (with the Province of Siena) on an observatory on the sustainability, to introduce a model based on statistical indicators that could be used firstly at local level, but in the future can be extended to other territories and regions. The University of Siena commits itself to produce an annual report on sustainability, in January of each year, to assess the improvement of the actions described. The main key internal resources are, as we said, the Network Nesso and the working group of Unidea. Our main partners are local governments (Province of Siena, Municipality of Siena), the regional government (Regione Toscana), the national government (Ministero dell?ambiente, MATTM), and the economic actors of the territory, such as the associations of enterprises (Camera di commerico, Confindustria, CNA).
