The University of Shiga Prefecture
Description/achievement of initiative

The University of Shiga Prefecture (USP) was established for tackling environmental problems in 1995. It is situated on the shores of Lake Biwa, located in central Japan. Our missions are developing students ability to solve complex environmental problems and inquiring on those problems.

Implementation methodologies

We started a new education program Field-based learning for environmental human resources collaborating with ASEAN universities, which is a learning program on sites to develop problem-solving ability and to apply students profession and the study-fields will be selected in an Asian region. We also study fresh water conservation and a low carbon society. The School of Environmental Science, School of Engineering, and Center for Socio-ecological Systems are mainly conducting such themes. We have an environmental management scheme toward a greener USP campus. The environment management council is organized of both staffs and students. The council is now wrestling with reducing energy consumption and GHG emissions.
