To raise the visibility of the Sustainable Development policy research community by
The purpose of the development of the SD book series is to give higher visibility to the SD “brand”. Currently publications that belong to the SD literature are often not easily identifiable as such. The purpose of the collection would be to establish an instantly recognizable brand. Contacts have been taken with Earthscan to start such a book series.
The distinguished lecture series would aim to showcase prominent speakers on sustainable development topics. The target audience would be political and administrative people revolving around the UN, as well as the New York-based research community. One of the rationales for such a series is its relatively low marginal cost. A number of eminent speakers travel to New York in the course of a year. Mobilizing them for an extra half-day is likely to be a proposition that many would consider in exchange for the opportunity to address the political community.
One of the main services that the SDKP could provide is to bring policy research closer to the political process, i.e, the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) and the international political process more broadly. Analytical input produced by network members could be made available to policy makers through inter alia: (i) Incorporation of insights from members’ publications into official UN documents; (ii) dissemination of the working papers produced by the partnership as CSD background papers; (iii) presentation of the partnership’s publications at CSD activities including learning centers or side events; and (iv) training for capacity-building of policy makers (see Capacity Building working group).
